Fall Favorites

DSCN0679

These are a few of my favorites things…

Michael Kors Selena Satchel: I bought this bag during the Bloomingdale’s family and friends discount sale, and I have been wearing it every since. I love that it is structured and can stand alone no matter how you pack your items into it. I also love the gold hardware since I have been wearing gold a lot lately.

Alice and Olivia Starbucks Mug/Lipton Green Teas: Who doesn’t want to drink their tea out of an adorable cup?! I purchased this cup at Starbucks not too long ago and I am so in love with it. I am also addicted to these Lipton green teas, which I have been drinking out of my mug. I drink green tea EVERY SINGLE DAY now! Every since I went to Teavana and tasted their amazing tea blends, I had to find something comparable. Red Goji Raspberry (Wegmans) and Purple Acai Blueberry (Wegmans/Walmart) are my favorites.

Victoria’s Secret Bombshell Body Mist: This body mist is so light and fresh. I smelled the perfume and instantly fell in love, but I didn’t want to pay $55 for it. So I bought the smaller size to see how it worked with my body chemistry. Now I carry it in my bag and spray it whenever I feel  the urge to…Go smell it when you have some free time…

Favorite Nail Polishes at the Moment: Orly’s Pretty Ugly, Zoya’s Raven, and Formula X’s Zing. The clear nail polish is my new base coat…Rejuvacote is a nail strengthener that I had heard a lot of great things about. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and I definitely like the results. Even though my nails still have the tendency to break, its only a chip here and there. They are much stronger than they have been.

The Art of War for Writers and Bird by Bird: I’ve had these books forever, but I have recently been rereading them to get some literary inspiration. I am working on developing a book idea I have and these books are helping me quite a bit. One thing I have learned from them is that you must write every day and at the same time every day. It’s also helpful if you to pretend that there is an imaginary gun to your head so that you don’t get up before you’re supposed to (only other writers/inspiring writings will understand that). LOL…Anne Lamott talks a lot about how you must quiet all the distractions (internally and externally) so that you can get to magic…the writing! I know this all sounds crazy, but I am learning that writing has to become a habit. I’m still working on that…

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Preview: Accessories

I took a trip to the Nordstrom in Annapolis, Maryland on Thursday evening with my Mom, and was not wowed by much of what I saw. She left out of the store with 4 items and I left out with none! Shocking, isn’t it?! Lol…There are a handful of things that I liked but wasn’t willing to buy. One item that I am still contemplating is a Marc by Marc Jacobs Wallet, which I’ve included below.

I was expecting to purchase a rose gold watch (the best looking one in the sale is listed below as well), but a lot of the sale options this year looked cheap. Not sure what that is about but whatevs…But as far as accessories go, here is a preview of some things I thought you all may like:

Handbag Review: Marc by Marc Jacobs Preppy Colorblock Satchel

DSCN0067

Can you imagine how excited I was when I received this colorblocked satchel as a gift from my boyfriend?! When I opened it I was so surprised at the color choice. How sweet and thoughtful (Thank you, Jay…xxxx). He knows that I love satchels, but wanted to switch things up a bit by forcing me out of my black satchel comfort zone…Loves it!

I’ve had this satchel for a few months now and I like to get a good feel for a bag before I review it here on the blog. The bag is super cute and easy to carry so I defintely would recommend it to you all. Here is my breakdown of the pros and cons…

Pros:

  • The gold hardware is everything!! I love the richness of it, and it seems to be longlasting as there isn’t any sign of wear. The yellow accents also make the satchel stand out.
  • Like my DVF satchel I discussed here, I love that this satchel is already colorblocked, and can easily be rocked with a t-shirt and jeans or a sun dress.
  • The leather is very soft and forgiving so the bag opens up wide enough for you to see everything inside. For those us who like to carry big handbags, things often get lost in them, but I don’t have that problem with this one.
  • The bag is very lightweight so I can pack a million things into it and still carry it comfortably.
  • It maintains its shape, unlike my other Marc by Marc Jacobs handbag. I hate it when bags look great on display because they are stuffed with tissue, but look awful once you take the tissue out. Very faux fabulous.
  • The many straps make the bag versatile. You can carry it on your forearm, shoulder or as a cross body bag.

Cons:

  • And this con is not a big deal at all…The shoulder strap is really long. I am about 5’7 and I made the strap as short as I possibly could and its still a little longer than I like. But for those of you that are taller than me, you would definitely appreciate the long strap.

Side and Inside Details

Overall, I think the bag is amazing. I will continue to wear it into the Spring and Summer months. I love how casual it is. I can conveniently use it when I am shopping or running errands and want to carry something that isn’t fussy. I also love that it exapnds so I can toss my journals and ipad in it without any trouble. Unfortunately, it’s no longer available at Nordstrom where he found it, but you can find this satchel at Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue. Hope you all enjoyed this post…xx

My Fall Handbag: DVF Drew Patchwork Satchel

20120926-172025.jpg

When looking for a handbag for my birthday recently, I was contemplating whether or not I should splurge on the Alexander Wang Rocco bag. After much consideration I decided not to buy it. One reason why I refrained was because it is bloody expensive (in my Rebecca Bloomwood voice…if you have not read Sophie Kinsella’s Confessions of a Shopaholic get off my blog right now!)! Anywhoo, the handbag retails for $875. With tax that is quite close to $1000…I just couldn’t wrap my head around spending that much money on a handbag right now. But let me be clear, do not be surprised if it eventually makes an appearance here on Clutchez a year or two from now! I’m just saying…

20121001-195629.jpg

I was also considering several Tory Burch satchels until I saw a complaint on Nordstrom.com about how the piping on the straps was coming aloose. Sheesh! So I kept looking and was considering a Diane Von Furstenburg bag one of my friends purchased recently (hey Tameka!). And when it went on sale on DVF.com I had to get it.

While I love fashion, I really hate to pay full price for anything! I always try to wait for things to go on sale especially if they cost a pretty penny! The DVF Drew Satchel Patchwork retails for $545, but was on sale for 30% off when I purchased it. It’s available here if you are interested in puchasing as well.

Here are 5 reasons why I love this satchel:

  1. It is huge! I can fit my books/journal as well as my ipad in it.
  2. It is effortlessly color blocked already. I love the various patterns and colors on the bag. The blue handles really makes the bag noticeably unique. The various textures and colors make this handbag versatile and it goes with everything!
  3. It is very structured. I love that it maintains its shape when you sit it down on a desk or table.
  4. It can be carried in the nook of my arm or carried as a shoulder bag.
  5. It is a classic handbag that is both trendy and timeless.

Review: Michael Kors Grayson Satchel

My sister (Hey Kerri!) came by my house last night and I was obsessing over her Michael Kors Grayson (large) satchel she recently received for Christmas when I noticed that there was something on it…I thought she had gotten something on the bag and that it just needed to be wiped off. To my surprise the patent leather coating on the satchel was coming off on both sides of the handbag! She has literally been carrying this satchel for two weeks and is quite disappointed in the quality of the bag.

We both are huge Michael Kors fans, but this is ridiculous…See it for yourself:

(Click on the images to enlarge them)

I took a look at the reviews on this bag on www.Nordstrom.com and a number of customers have had a similar experience after only carrying the handbag a few times. So just be aware of the fact that the coating on this particular handbag is not durable or longlasting. I suggested to my sister that she take it back to Nordstrom and get a totally different bag because this is absurd!

I hope this post is helpful to you as you shop for handbags…Smooches!! XOXO

Totes

With my last year of grad school quickly approaching, I am in need of a new tote bag. I’ll be doing tons of reading and research as well as writing so I am looking for something that can handle my spiral notebooks, books, and the rest of the junk I carry around with me on a daily basis. Here are a few that I am considering…If you have any suggestions for totes I may like, please do not hesitate to let me know!!

Choosing the Right Handbag (Part Two)

As readers of my blog you should already know that I would recommend that you buy your handbags at Nordstrom. Their customer service is phenomenal and their return policy is amazing. However, I am not crazy enough to think that other department stores don’t have similar return policies. Just be sure to find out what the return policy is before purchasing because if you are going to spend a lot of money on your handbag, you will want to be able to bring it back if something goes wrong. Other department stores where you can find nice handbags are Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Lord and Taylor.

You should also check out stores like Off Saks 5th Ave., Filene’s Basement, Loehmann’s, Neiman Marcus Last Call, and Nordstrom Rack. You can find a lot of discounted handbags from previous seasons there. Outlets are also a great way to save money on name brand items so be sure to check them out as well.

Last but not least, if you live near any boutiques or thrift shops don’t sleep on them. They just might have exactly what you are looking for. Thrift shops are hit or miss, but most of the time boutiques will have very unique, one of a kind, handmade bags that aren’t heavily manufactured so you won’t have to worry about seeing another woman carrying your bag.

Sidenote: If you choose to purchase handbags through websites like Ebay, be very careful because not everyone is honest and it is easy to be deceived online. Check the sellers return policy as well as their ratings before bidding.

Brands:

I am a huge fan of coach (especially the Madison satchels, which is why I own three of them)!! Other brands I love are Guess Marciano, Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, Steven by Steve Madden, L.A.M.B., and Juicy Couture. These are mainly the brands that I actually own, but there are many others that I like…however, I won’t bore you with all the extra commentary.

Final Tips:

My sister always makes the joke that all my handbags have bags (i.e. dust bags), which I think is hilarious, but totally necessary!! You don’t want your bags to get dusty when you are not wearing them so you should definitely make sure that you place them in a dust bag when storing them in your closet.

Now for the fun stuff…Here are a few bags that are on my wish list…for whatever reason I am obsessed with Marc Jacobs at the moment! This first one I am definitely going to purchase!

Choosing the Right Handbag (Part One)

I initially started my blog in 2009 with the intent of sharing my handbag obsession with the rest of the world. I can shop with the best of them, but now I try to be more cautious about how I spend my money. I don’t impulsively purchase every handbag that tickles my fancy anymore.

First, I consider how long the bag is going to last versus the price. I try to avoid buying cheaply-made bags because I know they aren’t going to last. After you’ve purchased a handful of cheap handbags, you might as well have just saved up for a quality one. Don’t get me wrong though, I am not saying that a big name has to be attached to a bag for it to be considered good quality. Sidenote: I also don’t buy knockoffs…I think it is disingenuous and faux fabulous, but that is a post for another day.

How to Choose Them:

When choosing a handbag, you not only have to consider the price and longevity but you also need to consider your lifestyle. Ask yourself a few questions…Do you carry a lot of things with you on a daily basis? If so, then you may want to consider carrying a large satchel or tote. Do you carry only the bare essentials (i.e. license, keys, debit card, and lipbalm)? If you require very little, then you may want to consider a cross body bag or wrislet. If you go out often, then you may want to invest in some clutch purses as well so that you can leave your grandma purse at home when you go out for a night on the town. What color are you looking for? Go for neutral colors (i.e. black, brown, tan, cognac, etc.) if you are just starting your handbag collection. Otherwise, choose whatever color you want! Don’t be afraid to step outside the box , it’s just a handbag! Let it be another reflection of your personality like the rest of your accessories. Just be mindful of the fact that color from your clothing can transfer onto your handbag (i.e. if you wear dark denim the dye can transfer onto your bag). So be careful with the lighter toned leather handbags.

You also must be mindful of the way in which a bag is made. Does it have a lot of  hardware? Remove all of the tissue (provided that it actually has tissue in it…displays usually do)  and see how heavy it feels when it’s empty. If the handbag is heavy and you haven’t actually put your personal belongings in it yet then you may want to reconsider. Handbags with  a lot of hardware and embellishments are cute but will be a hardship on your shoulders and forearm after a short while. Look at the straps, examine the quality of the stitching on the entire bag. Make sure that the quality of the handbag is up to par.

Lastly, look at the price!! Don’t waste time falling in love with a bag that you cannot afford (although there is nothing wrong with dreaming)! It is better to be prepared so have a price range in mind before you step foot into a department store or you will easily get sidetracked and end up overspending (trust me, I know!). It doesn’t have to be exact, but you do want to have an idea of what you’re going to spend.

To be continued…

I hope this information  is helpful to you. Stay tuned for part two of this post…I will tell you where to find the most fabulous and affordable bags. I’ll also show you what handbags are currently on my wishlist! Smooches!! XOXO
