Mean Girls…

IMG_6918

I have been blogging for almost 3 years now, and one thing that I have noticed about the internet world is that so many women get off on tearing other women down online. Why? Nothing exhibits this more than Youtube and fashion blog commentary. Women are constantly berating other women. For instance, I sometimes look at the Fashion Bombshell of the Day posts on Fashion Bomb Daily, and the comments are always dripping with mean-spirited criticisms instead of constructive ones. A difference of opinion is perfectly normal and constructive criticism is often needed, but if your intentions are to get a laugh or to hurt someone’s feelings, I’m not down for that. And it happens all the time…

The internet seems to give people super powers. The things they wouldn’t dare say to someone’s face are so freely expressed online. It must be nice to be able to sit back and criticize the people who have the confidence to put it all out there for everyone to see. Many of these comments, of course, are submitted anonymously and are most likely from broads who are unhappy with themselves. Stop pointing out someone else’s insecurities in order to mask your own. Quite frankly, it’s desperate, unladylike and tacky.

But you’d rather be an internet gangsta, right? You are running around telling all the ‘fashionistas’ online exactly what is wrong with their looks, style, teeth, hair and priorities. You are “keeping it real.” But guess what ladies, if you do not like what you see you can easily close the window…Click the red X on your internet browser and rid yourself of all the unfashionable nonsense you despise. If someone’s style or content isn’t your cup of tea then unsubscribe. The great thing about the internet is that you do not have to engage in things that do not interest you.

Another assumption that is often made is that people do not have lives outside of their presence on the internet. I love to look good, but trust that my life isn’t all leopard and sequins. My blog, and any other social media I am on, is a very small part of my life and I think other bloggers would agree with that sentiment. While I love fashion, I am also a lover of art, education, books, family, friends and a host of other things.

Furthermore, while you are passing judgment on the things I (or others) are wearing or discussing online, where is your outfit? Where is your content? Where is your blog, novel, or any other contribution to this culture? Unfortunately, you have none…And you don’t have any because you are too preoccupied with worrying about what someone else is doing.  Please realize that this is preventing you from contributing something meaningful. But I am not here to judge you either. If you choose not to do anything culturally or intellectually stimulating for the rest of your life, that is perfectly fine with me. However, learn to stay in your lane…Do not harass women who are comfortable in their skin and seek to share their style with the world. That does not make them superficial and it does not give you the right to brow beat them for every single thing that you do not like about their style.

So next time you decide to post a comment stating that someone’s shoes look cheap in their outfit of the day (OOTD) post or that they need to spend their money on their child instead of clothing and accessories, think of the saying that your mother should have taught you:

If you do not have anything nice to say then do not say anything at all.  xx

Kel’s Current Crush List

Kel's Current Crush List
I have been obsessing over this Kate Spade Beau satchel since the very beginning of fall. Now that I have returned my Wang (which was the worse bag EVER), I think I am going to replace it with this baby…I tried it on in Nordstrom yesterday and decided that it is def the right fit for me. Gawgeous!!
But, I am supposed to be focusing my attention on shoes…Shoes are the only thing that I really don’t have, so these two babies above are on my wish list. Nine times out of ten, I will go for the pumps even though pumps never fit me properly. I have the hardest time finding a pair of pumps that don’t look like I have a huge gap in between the back of my shoe and the back of my foot. The struggle is so real yall…So I’ll probably end up with the boots for rainy and snowy days.
The rest of my wish list is minor…I’ve been eyeing Tory Burch earrings (several pairs) for well over a year now. There are certain things that I have a hard time spending money on and costume jewelry is one of them. Lol…Regardless, not wanting to spend $58 on these has not stopped me from wanting them.
You guys know I love my sunnies as well. These futuristic babies are calling my name. I really don’t need them, but their future in my accessory closet is looking bright.
And everyone knows Mac’s Heroine lipstick is a must have. No need to elaborate on that one…

What To Wear: Black on Black

I don’t know about you guys but I am so guilty of obsessing over what to wear. Honestly, it can get kind of ridiculous sometimes. On New Year’s Eve though, I thought I would keep it simple…Nothing special, no sequins, no tiny little dress, none of that. But a bit of leather never hurt anyone so I wore this:

{Top and Jeans: Express. Boots: Jessica Simpson. Clutch: Rebecca Minkoff. Watch: Michael Kors. Nails: Formula X (Sephora): High Frequency.}

I absolutely adore this leather top from Express, which has become one of my favorite stores. They always have some sort of promotion going on and I never pay full price for anything.

I received this top as a gift for my birthday a few months ago and finally had the opportunity to wear it. I would have loved to wear a gold chain with this top, but I haven’t found the right one just yet. The gold chain I do have is a bit too chunky for this look. So if you guys have any gold necklaces that you’d like to recommend, let me know…

What did you guys do to celebrate the New Year? And who else just throws black on when they don’t know what to wear? I know I’m not the only one…

I hope everyone’s New Year is off to a great start!! xx

Living for the Weekend…

DSCN0429

I dread Mondays…I am getting to the point where I LIVE for the weekend! Right now my day job is so incredibly busy (I am a Financial Aid Counselor and we are now processing loans for the upcoming academic year) that I really do look forward to waking up and having absolutely nothing to do for two whole days!

I’ve finally gotten settled in my place, and this space right here is probably my favorite (well, I also love the kitchen, but I digress). That accent wall is everything! I haven’t put any paintings or anything up yet, but this is my happy place right now. I love sitting on the couch with my laptop, surfing the net while I watch ratchet television shows…

My sectional is so comfortable, I never want to get off of it. In fact, my place is so comfy I only left out this weekend to run a few errands, and I came right back in the house. And now that I am back at work today my phone won’t stop ringing…Ugh…But I thank God for a job!

Happy Monday folks! Hope everyone has a blessed week! xx

Spikes & Thangs…

DSCN0213

I’ve been looking for a cute military chic jacket for quite some time now and although I was supposed to be shopping for a dress to wear to graduation yesterday, I stumbled upon this. I had seen it online on Forever 21’s website (available here) and I have been contemplating whether or not I should buy it. I was hesitant to purchase it online because I wasn’t sure about which size to get, and I was a bit leery of the price point. However, when I saw it in the store yesterday I had to have it. I was thinking that this would be super cute for the fall, but since Summer is still playing hide and seek here in Maryland, I just might get some wear out of it this month.

DSCN0208

For some odd reason I am absolutely obsessed with spikes and studs. Do you guys remembered when I purchased this Rebecca Minkoff Wallet on a Chain last summer? Yup, I am still loving it! I usually only carry it when I am going out and want to be hands-free, but it is still want of my favorite pieces in my accessory closet. Who doesn’t love a cute, lightweight crossbody!?

DSCN0212

This one is no longer available but Rebecca Minkoff has come out with a number of crossbody bags that are really similar. I see that many designers have caught on to this trend and now you can find spikes or studs on practically everything! Shoes, handbags, hats, jewelry, and even iphone cases. This spike trend is getting out of hand but I have to admit, I am loving it!

I hope you all enjoyed this post. Talk to you soon…Be blessed! xx…Kel

Celebrating My Black History: Emma Ray

photo (3)

In the interest of celebrating Black History month, I thought that I would discuss one of my style muses…My grandmother. She died back in the early 90s so I didn’t have much time to enjoy her, but I always cherish the memories she has left behind.

Emma Ray was a firecracker…And her style was just as sassy as her personality. I love looking back at photographs of her and incorporating her style into my own…I suppose that it’s my way of paying homage.

Emma Ray 1

My granny really represented for us brown skin girls and she always had such a beautiful figure (sure wish I had her shape now! Lol). She was infamous for wearing long earrings and carrying big clutch purses. She loved to wear those sexy pantyhose that had the black seam going up the back of the leg.

And boy did she love her red nails…She always had long beautiful nails too. Even once she had gotten much older, she would ask me to paint her nails and toes red. Every time I think about that I chuckle to myself because now I know where my nail polish obsession came from.

Emma Ray 2

Those cheek bones…And how hot is her clutch sitting on the bar?!

Its so funny because I never thought my Mom looked like my grandmother until recently…She is just as beautiful and stylish as grandma. Do you ever look at the women in your family, or even outside of your family and think to yourself, “Wow, I want to be like that when I get older”?

If it wasn’t for women like this, we (as young black women) would not be as fortunate as we are today. Unfortunately, both of my grandmothers have passed on, but if yours is still alive, please appreciate her and value the time that you have with her. I really do miss mine….

Stay tuned, as I will probably do another post on my other grandmother (sometime this month) who was also a forced to be reckoned with back in her day. Lol…I hope you all enjoyed this post. Be blessed. xx

Style Icon: First Lady, Michelle Obama

M. Obama 5

Have you ever seen a first lady more classy, more regal, than Michelle Obama? Not only is the woman practically a genius, she is gorge. A lot of people have been obsessed with her style since the first inauguration 4 years ago, but over this past year or so  I have really begun to take notice of how her style is evolving.

M. Obama 2

While Michelle always looks professional, she often likes to play with color. How beautiful is she in this lavendar number she’s wearing here? Definitely, not anything like the average suit you will find on Capital Hill. I imagine that her wardrobe is full of beautiful hues like this one.

I don’t know about you but I have never looked at any of our previous First Ladies and said to myself, “I would rock that”…Well, once again Mrs. O does not cease to amaze me with these beautiful ball gowns. Showing off those toned shoulders…Her body is looking better than mine! Lol

And have you noticed that homegirl has a bit of a wild side? Every now and then Michelle adds a bit of edge to her wardrobe and I am in love with all of it. Although we are used to seeing her with the “side part-swoosh” hair style, I am really digging her new bangs. I think it makes her look youthful and a tad bit more hip.

BTW, look at how quickly Sasha and Malia are growing up?! I’m sure they will be little fashionistas as well. I hope you enjoyed this post. Talk to you soon! xx

Style Icon: Angela Simmons

Like the rest of America, I began to follow Angela Simmons when her family’s show began on MTV: Run’s House. The daughter of Rev Run from Run DMC, has officially stepped out of her father’s shadow. She began writing for Word Up Magazine, and eventually went on to create, along with her sister Vanessa Simmons, her own line of tasty tennis shoes: Pastry.

Though Pastry is cute, Angela’s style is what comes to mind whenever her name is mentioned. Whether she is dressed for the gym, the club or a fashion show, the chick is always effortlessly chic. Check out some pictures of her below:

Gosh, I love this chick’s style!!! Accessories, nails, hair, everything is always so well put together…Not sure that I would be able to pull off the combat boots (I’ll leave that to Angela and Meagan Good), but I think I would def rock the rest of these looks…What do you think?

Enjoy! Smooches…XOXO

Although neons are in this Spring, they can sometimes be overwhelming. What I would suggest is that you add pops of color into your wardrobe, mixing them with neutrals to keep your look balanced. Regardless of your personal style everyone could use these bright hues to liven up their closet. Whether it’s your nail polish, handbag or your jeans, you will turn heads with this eye catching trend…Check out the looks below:

Keep in mind that everything doesn’t have to match exactly…Have fun and just go with it!!
