The Desk

DSCN0202

For some reason, both at work and at home, I have to have cute accessories on my desk. I mean, having a desk job is boring enough with being forced to use blue and black ink pens and square yellow post-its all day every day. Inserting a bit of you and your personality to your work space, whether at home or at work, is one key to getting things done. I know what you all are thinking…I am too old for pink heart post-its and Hello Kitty journals, right? What about no! Girly things make me happy. I like writing with mint green pens, customizing my stationary, and buying girly-looking journals…Although you may not be into that sort of thing, you should find your own way to insert who you are into your office space.

Sometime ago, my mother bought me this paperweight by Annie Lee and I am still in love with it.  This is sooooo me! Passed out on the couch amongst shopping bags (Maxed Out is what it’s called). How appropriate?! Lol…Trust, that I don’t max out my credit cards (anymore…Lol), but I used to have the tendency to shop until I dropped back in the day.

As you all know I have an inspiration board sitting on my desk as well (although I need to update it with my spring/summer inspiration). I even find that displaying my Pinterest boards while I am blogging, or trying to come up with ideas, is very helpful. Organization is also a large part of being successful. Keeping a calendar and developing a plan, month by month, of what you need to get done is incredibly helpful. I have recently started keeping a blogging calendar on my desk so that I know which days I am supposed to be writing, scheduling posts, and publishing (my current goal is at least two posts per week). But I can’t take all the credit for this idea. LaToya from Something Blue Weddings DC actually inspired me to keep this sort of calendar.

As I mentioned in my book post here, I am obsessed with books! Whether they are spiritually motivating or just fashionably fun, I always have books on my desk. I have books on any and every topic that interests me sitting on my desk so that I can quickly access them. The books below are ones that I reach for often.

One last thing that isn’t normally on my desk, but is currently fun to look at are my graduation announcements. Graduating from Georgetown with my Masters degree is one of my greatest accomplishments, and basking in the notion that I did it (with God’s help, of course) has made me realize that the things that are worth having in life aren’t always easy to obtain. Sometimes, you have to want things so badly that you just refuse to give up…So go after what you want because you may be very surprised at the outcome.

How do you keep your desk organized/interesting? Am I the only one who likes post-its that are made into various shapes?

I hope you all enjoyed this post. Talk to you soon!

Inspire Yourself

IMG_4157

My inspiration board, which sits on my desk, is one of my many muses! Since it is related to fashion/accessories I figured that I would discuss it here on the blog today. An inspiration board is simply a collage of images, quotations, objects, etc. that are somehow related to a central topic or theme. The purpose of an inspiration board is to focus, encourage and motivate you to achieve your end goal (whatever it may be). There are no limits or rules. Therefore, your board can be whatever you want it to be.

Here are a few steps I used when creating my boards:

First, you need to figure out why you want to create an inspiration board. Inspiration boards can be used for a multitude of reasons such as personal style development, business plans, redecoration/remodeling projects, event planning, etc. The board I’ve posted above is a personal style board where I have made a collage of looks/accessories/colors that I would like to try and/or incorporate into my personal style. Second, you need to figure out what types of things inspire you visually.  The things that you find most interesting and intriguing should go on your board. Depending on what type of board you are seeking to create, your images should reflect your thought process regarding the subject or theme. Third, make it interesting. Add some funky background paper to spice your board up a bit. Check out places like Hobby Lobby and Michaels. The chevron print paper that you see in the background here is from Hobby Lobby. I used three sheets, which were about $0.75 each. I also purchased some special scissors, which I used to cut some of the pictures, which adds a little fringe and flare to the board as well.

My Pinterest Boards…

Fourth, place the board in a location where you can see it on a daily basis so that it is a constant reminder of the goals you have in mind. With a board figuratively jumping out at you, it will be hard for you to slack off too much in regards to your goals. Lastly, if you find that your board isn’t as inspiring as you would like it to be, change it! That’s one of the advantages of creating a board like this, you can change it anytime you feel like it and it won’t cost you anything. Boards are meant to be fun and productive projects so don’t take it too seriously. Well, do take it seriously, but remember that it is not meant to be a burden on you. Its meant to be an easy tool. Also remember that your board may constantly change. I am actually not finished with mine, but I don’t expect to ever be finished because I am constantly adding, removing, and altering the images on it. I expect this one to change a little with every season.

Most of the photographs on my board are from my Pinterest account online.  The rest of the photos are from various magazines as well as some of my favorite bloggers’ websites. The board itself is from Ikea and retails for about $20. I have another board I bought from Target (for my personal goals) and that one was only about $10 so be sure to look around and see what kinds of boards are available in your price range. If you are the not arts and crafts type then create an account with Pinterest like the one pictured above and establish an inspiration board electronically.

What kinds of things inspire you? Do you have an inspiration board or some other method you use to motivate yourself? Are you on Pinterest? If so, do tell so that I can follow you.

Talk to you soon…xx

Inspirational Spaces

My friend, Latoya of Something Blue DC, has gotten me addicted to Pinterest! Some of LaToya’s most amazing pins are the home decor ones…She is always talking about her dream home (which mostly consists of her dream closet/library…Lol), and after drooling over her pictures, I decided to start seeking inspiration of my own. In looking through thousands of pictures of dream homes and how various people decorate each room of their houses, I discovered that even though I don’t have my dream home yet, I could at least have my (mini) dream office…

So I have been on the prowl for desks, bookshelves (as all of my books will not fit on the one bookshelf I have right now) and other accessories that I think will help me turn my empty dining room into a little inspirational office. My ultimate goal is to have a space where I can blog, write and read without being tempted to fall asleep. As for right now, when I want to work on my thesis, I have to leave the house because my couch and my bed are way too comfy! And yes, I am that person that needs to be sitting at a desk/table in order to be productive.

Anywho…here are some inspiring office spaces that are really giving me life right now…

I’m sure you’ve noticed one thing that all of these offices have in common…yes, they are all white!! White, lucite, glass, and stainless steel furniture always looks so chic and modern to me. And since I am also revamping my living room, transitioning the color palette to black and white, I figured that a white desk may be just what I need. You should also notice that at least two of these office spaces have lucite ghost chairs. I am totally obsessed with lucite furniture right now! I’ve been eyeing the ghost chairs at Ikea for months, but I think I am going to go ahead and get it. I am also tempted to grab a faux fur rug but we shall see!

My sister and I are going to look at some furniture this weekend. Once I finalized everything and I have my place the way I want it, I’ll be sure to post pictures that, hopefully, will inspire others. Until next time…See ya!! XOXO

Pinterest

I recently joined the world of Pinterest! I am probably so late on this, but there are soooo many social media sites that I sometimes have a hard time keeping up with them! The picture below shows all four of my boards. I definitely like the concept and find Pinterest to be quite inspiring. So be sure to check me out on Pinterest and let me know if you’re on there so that I can follow your inspiration boards as well. You can find me at: http://pinterest.com/Clutchez/
